Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a spectrum of neurodevelopment disorders. ASD is characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior and can range in severity from mild (such as Asperger's Disorder) to severe (autism or classic ASD). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 out of 88 children age 8 will have ASD. Males are four times more likely to have an ASD than females.
It is unknown what causes ASD, but there are several theories being tested.
